How to update your website content and keep it from getting stagnant

Once you’ve got your website up and running, here are some ideas of things you could do to keep your website content fresh and search-friendly.

A website is not set-and-forget!

Once you’ve got your website up and running, there is still some ongoing work that should be done to keep your content fresh and searchable. Pictures of new things, articles describing what you have been up to in your business, where you think your business will be headed in the next week/months/year, or maybe updating your SEO plugin information on some of your existing content.

Plan Ahead

Write some new blog articles that build on things you have previously posted. When writing new articles, aim to have about 1000 words per post. If that doesn’t seem feasible, initially aim for 500-600 words and then build up from there. More content keeps readers on your site longer and, hopefully, gives them more reasons to interact with your business. Plan ahead about what topics and keywords you are wanting to target for your website and try to include them in your article. Consider creating a multi-part article that will have readers wanting to return and visit your site to get the next part. Write up the whole article at once, and then you can schedule which parts to post when so you don’t forget to follow up with the ‘next week we’ll talk about …’ article.

Organize and Update Previous Website Content

Maybe you need to go back and update older content with newer information and link it to other content on your site. This has the extra benefit of giving new visitors a path to seeing previous content that they didn’t know was there. If you haven’t before, perhaps it’s a good time to categorize your articles with specific taxonomies so your readers can find the information that they are looking for quicker and easier. Don’t forget to update your social media platforms to let people know that you have new content available either.
