AI Usage Policy
This is our take on AI and how we decide where and when it is used.
Our general feelings on AI
From what we have seen of AI so far, we feel that it is beginning to be a very useful tool for designers, developers and content providers and will help reduce the time and cost of website projects. We feel that there is little threat of AI replacing actual humans in reputable workplaces any time in the near future, but if it does become a common practice, we will not participate in that practice, nor will be support companies that trade in their human employees for AI bots.
We also recognize the potential of abuse of this technology (by humans) and assume that AI is already in use (by humans) to proliferate scams and other crimes (upon humans). The proliferation of scam emails, phone calls and text messages has grown exponentially within the last couple of years, no doubt with the help of AI (directed by humans). As far as the risk of AI taking over the world and killing all human competition… well, we feel that we are probably a ways out from anything like that, but there is still plenty of damage that can be done in the meantime by humans using AI to harm to other humans.
No matter what use it is being put to, we do advise and practice caution in using AI, but we don’t recommend that it should never be used for any reason.
How we may use AI in our projects
We may use AI minimally in some of our projects, but this usage does not replace anything we’d hire a human for:
Content Research and Writing
We may use AI for some initial writing tasks. AI is useful for shortening the time of research and writing tasks, but is only the beginning of a these tasks. We find common AI tool’s writing to be repetitive and lacking proper tone and voice. Because of the vast amount of data that AI pulls from, all statement of “facts” provided by AI are not to be trusted and must be validated against a legitimate source of information. Nothing that we publish will come out of AI and go directly into content of any online medium that we work on. AI can be a good starting point, but it will never be a final draft.
Graphics, Art, Layout and Other Visual Elements
We may use AI in Adobe Photoshop to generate new imagery that is thematically similar to other imagery that we are using, or to extend and modify existing imagery. AI lends itself well to providing derivative and complimentary graphics. Not all projects will require this kind of derivative work, but we will use this AI functionality as a tool if it becomes needed.
For logo work, branding, original graphics and UI design, we do not use AI. We feel that only a human can do this delicate work justice. For logos and graphics that need to convey feeling or message, we find that AI does not do a satisfactory job. A human mind, feelings and empathy are required for good design. For UI design and layout, we find the designs derivative, bland and inefficient. We work with brilliant human partners for stellar graphic design and they are worth every penny!
Coding
In general, we feel that there is currently no need for AI in the coding that we do. We do see the possibility of this being a handy time-saving tool down the line, so we will not rule out the usage of it. We can see it being useful for building application pieces, but we will not ever use AI to build a complete application, and will not allow AI access to any kind of production server credentials or connection specifics.
How to opt out of AI in your project
We have been creating websites for years without any help by AI. If you wish us not to use AI in any form on your project, it is no problem at all and won’t affect your project in any way. All you need to do is let us know you would prefer that we do not make use of AI. We are happy to omit those tools from your project.
