On May 27, 2023, we commemorate a significant milestone in the realm of digital publishing: it has been 20 years since the initial public release of WordPress core. What started as a solution to swiftly publish written content and photos on the internet has evolved into the world’s foremost content management system (CMS), extending far beyond its original blogging functionality. With its robust capabilities, WordPress now powers over 43% of the entire web and an impressive 63% of websites employing a recognizable CMS.
Nevertheless, WordPress encompasses more than mere software. It embodies an open-source community that tirelessly pursues innovation, inclusivity, and the democratization of publishing. WordPress represents a global ecosystem of products and services that welcomes individuals from all walks of life to participate and create using its platform. Whether you’re a freelancer, a small business owner, or part of a large enterprise, WordPress serves as the cornerstone of our professional pursuits.
In our web design and development projects, we primarily rely on WordPress as our CMS of choice. It allows us to extend themes from Astra or Genesis or to create our own designs from scratch which allows us to tailor each of our websites projects for each of our clients. It also allows us to extend the functionality of those websites by adding whatever plugin that would most fulfill the functionality requirements of those websites: e-commerce, SEO enhancements, or multi-language websites are all able to be created by extending the core functionality of WordPress.
As we celebrate this milestone, let us raise a toast to another 20 years and beyond. Let us envision a future where people from every corner of the world can effortlessly and creatively share their stories and businesses online, all thanks to the power of WordPress and open-source software.
